Explaining his reasons for having not written in so long, being his health and work; indicating that he recently stayed several months in Herne Bay with his sister and mother; thanking her for "directing Dunn's attention to the house in Hammersmith Mall" and discussing his intent to see it on his own; asking if she has any details as to renting it, as Dunn reported the agent to have been "rather reticent as to giving particulars"; expressing his regret at having missed a visit with Mrs. Sumner.

William and Georgina Cowper-Temple were significant figures in nineteenth-century Britain. William Cowper-Temple, later Lord Mount Temple, was private secretary to one Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne, and minister in the government of Lord Palmerston. He sought to improve the nation's health and rebuild London, and amended the Education Act in 1870.
